Chill Hours

This chart of chill hours was released from research stations on the southeast chill hours. High chill will not produce in the lower chilling regions, however low chilling plants will produce in the higher but caution must be taken to prevent freeze damage if low chill varieties are planted farther north. If chill hours are satisfied on low chill varieties in November and December they will begin producing flowers in January and are subject to freeze damage.

Frost Protection

Most of the Southern Highbush planted in the Southeastern United States are protected with overhead irrigation for frost and freeze protection. Proper design of a system is important to insure adequate protection for different cold events. If too little water is used, then more damage may occur then if it was left unprotected.

Water Application Rates based on Wind Speed & Temperature

Frost /Freeze Protection Using Solid Set Irrigation Equipment by Dr. Dale Linvill

Agricultural Weather Office, Clemson University

The following tables contain water application rates for several wind speed and temperature combinations. These are estimated sprinkling rates required for col protection for a 2 cm leaf. The temperature is for a dr unprotected leaf. (After J.D. Martsolf in Barfield, B.J., and J.F. Gerber. 1979. Moderation of the Aerial Environment of Crops. ASAE St. Joseph MI.)

sland Grove Ag Products origin

as a merger between two existing blueberry farms in north central Florida. The focus at that time was to produce quality blueberry plants and increase production in our own fields.

IGAP also participates in community functions in Hawthorne, our closest town.  Most notably is the clean-up and recovery of the City Park at Lake Johnson in which we contributed labor, equipment and plant material for this clean-up and enhancement project.  At the local high school, we donated and built a fruit orchard at the agricultural department hoping to inspire young adults to learn more about agriculture and fruit production.  The orchard contains blueberries, blackberries, grapes, pears, peaches, plums and persimmons.
